As a mom, I’m always on the lookout for snacks that meet a couple criteria: 1) they’re healthy; 2) they can easily be grabbed and thrown in a swim bag, a soccer bag, my purse (you get the idea) and 3) they are easy for mom to put together and have a decent shelf life. Since today’s theme is Health-ified On-The-Go Snack, I’m making one of those tried-and-true snacks you can just about ALWAYS find in our pantry – Sweet and Salty Trail Mix.
To make this trail mix, simply combine your favorites in 3 different categories –
Nuts – I typically use raw almonds, raw cashews, pistachios (our favorites!)
Seeds – pumpkin seeds
Dried Fruit – tart dried cherries, golden raisins, unsulphured dark raisins
Chocolate – dark chocolate
For the chocolate, I typically use Alter Ego Blackout chocolate bars, but this time I picked a Ritter Sport chocolate bar that gave me a 2-fer: dark chocolate and hazelnuts.
There’s something more rustic about chopping up a chocolate bar than dumping a bunch of round little candies into the mix.
I am a big proponent of the mason jar. I have mason jars in several different sizes and if you opened my pantry, you’d find a sea of mason jars. But, unfortunately, they are not safe for transporting to sporting events, etc for Mini Me. So, I revert to the ziplock bag for those situations.
